Pathfinder Bar

A Toast to the Pathfinder of the San Juan Mountains:

The Pathfinder Bar, located in the Wolf Creek Lodge, is named after Otto Mears who has family ties to the current owners of Wolf Creek Ski Area. Otto Mears was born on May 3, 1840 in Latvia, Russia. Otto enlisted with the California Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, which eventually brought Otto to Colorado in 1865 after being discharged in New Mexico when the war ended. He then moved to Saguache, Colorado and started a U.S. Mail Route in the San Juan Mountains, carrying mail on skis.

Mears was a stimulus for the settlement and development of the San Juan region through his skills of road construction and railroad building. He is most famous for forging the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, Silverton Railroad and Silverton Northern Railroad. The Denver Capital building is gilded in gold because Mears persuaded the Colorado Mining Association to donate 200 ounces of gold for the project. By 1908 the dome’s first gilding was complete.

The legendary pathfinder was grandfather to Kingsbury Pitcher, previous owner of Wolf Creek Ski Area and great-grandfather to Davey Pitcher who is current owner and CEO.
